Long Lost Family: What Happened Nex

Series overview

Over the past 12 series Long Lost Family has taken on more than seven hundred searches, reuniting family members who have been missing for decades and finding relatives people didn’t even know existed. But these meetings are only the very beginning. In this series we revisit seven searchers to discover how their lives have changed since finding their missing relatives, asking how easy is it to build a relationship after a lifetime apart, and what happens when searching doesn’t exactly go as planned. This is the series where we find out ‘What Happened Next’.

Episode 1

In episode one we catch up with two searchers who both grew up as only children, and were desperate to find their family; Joselyn Taylor had been searching for her brother, James, for over 20 years, and Roy Sibblies was looking for his birth mother, after discovering at 18 that he was adopted.

Hollywood Bulldogs

Hollywood Bulldogs is the new feature-length documentary from the makers of Elstree 1976 and Anyone Can Play Guitar.

Once again, director Jon Spira is taking a sideways glance at pop culture and pulling back the curtain to reveal another community with a story to tell. This time: Stunt performers.

Narrated by British legend Ray Winstone, this film tells the story of a very special group of grizzled old geezers who, between the 1960s and 2000s, not only changed the face of British stunt work but also dominated the Hollywood blockbusters of their age.

Anyone who loves movies will have enjoyed the iconic adrenaline-fuelled moments these guys created but very few will have seen their faces. Packed with behind-the-scenes footage and spectacular stunts from classic and little-seen movies, the Hollywood Bulldogs take us on a journey from silent cinema right up to modern day in their own gruff and rye style - with more than a few choice tales of chaos, tragedy and hilarity along the way.

Like Spira’s previous films, Hollywood Bulldogs plays to a wide audience demographic - there’s plenty of high-octane footage and fun but the film also allows the interviewees to be reflective and ruminative and discuss issues of a more serious and meaningful nature. This documentary is a crowd-pleaser with depth and substance.

Six Four

[Full series drop on ITVX on Thursday 30 March]

Series overview

‘Six Four’ by Hideo Yokoyama is a novel about the individual's relationship to the truth, and the moral corruption that can exist in institutions and the people who populate them.

Set in a Japanese police department, it tracks the corrosive effects of a mistake in a historic kidnap case which led to the death of a young girl.

The mistake, by a panicked young policeman, was covered up, but haunts those involved for the rest of their careers, and, inevitably, corrupts the institution of which they are a part. When, fifteen years later, a detective is provoked into revisiting the case when his own daughter goes missing, he is forced to fight against the suffocating hierarchy of deference that blights Japanese society in order to reveal the truth about the institution he is working for.

The UK is, obviously a much less deferential society than Japan, but part of the reason that I thought ‘Six Four’ would prove fertile territory for a television adaptation here is that in recent years we have not lacked our own examples of institutional inertia; whether miscarriages of justice, failures of governance, or scandals in politics and business, our public life and collective health has been jeopardised by corruption. In many of these situations the same dilemma is at their core; to what is the individual within the institution loyal, and does that loyalty inevitably lead to a compromise with the truth. The individual's relationship with truth is what lies at the heart of ‘Six Four’.

Marriage is also an institution. At the core of the story of ‘Six Four’, there is a couple whose loyalty to each other, and relationship with the truth, is also being tested. In my adaptation, our couple, Chris and Michelle, have their lives thrown into turmoil by the disappearance of their teenage daughter, Olivia. The sudden absence of the child who represents their shared life and their love for each other, and who has been present in their relationship since the very beginning, forces them into a confrontation with their past and present. It forces them to re-examine everything. In the first instance, this fissure is provoked by their contrasting approach to how they tackle Olivia's disappearance. While Michelle heads for London and her previous life as an undercover police officer in the Met, Chris, still a serving detective in the Scottish Police, finds himself becoming drawn into a historic case by the questions of a journalist who is following up a lead on a story about it. This historic case is not something Chris was involved in, but it does involve his brother, Philip, who is about to be appointed the Chief Constable of the Scottish Police Service.

As Michelle delves deeper into her past life, and the deceptions that were an inevitable part of her job, she has to confront the dangerous people she was investigating, people who may still want to do her harm, but also the possibility that this life has made her too adept at lying. Chris, at the same time, is realising that the truth about the historical case he is pursuing, may not only destroy his brother's stellar career, but also endanger his own and his family's lives. And, both of them, separately, are converging on the same truth; that perhaps the person who may be the thing that holds them together, is the thing that is going to drive them apart.

Episode 1

DC Chris O’Neill is approached by a journalist about a cold case involving a missing girl. His own daughter is also missing, and his wife Michelle goes to London to search for her.

Jason & Clara: In Memory of Maudie

Actor Jason Watkins and his wife Clara Francis tell the emotional story of their daughter Maudie, who died suddenly aged just two and a half in the early hours of New Year’s Day 2011.

Maudie died of sepsis, a condition where the body’s immune system overreacts to an infection, causing it to go into overdrive and attack the body's tissues and organs.

Ever since the tragedy, Jason and Clara have been on a mission to raise awareness of sepsis and also to give hope to other bereaved parents.

Now, as the family are about to move from the flat where Maudie was born and died, they feel the time is right to tell their story and explore their grief.

Allowing the cameras to follow their personal journey, the couple have therapy together for the first time and meet other parents who have lost their children, in a bid to break taboos around talking about child bereavement.

Jason says: “I do feel apprehensive, I do think it’s a delicate thing and I think, ‘Are we doing the right thing?’ But it does feel something to be shared and it can help us and other people.”

Clara adds: “It’s about breaking down the taboo of child loss. It’s so grim and unspeakable, people don’t know what to say. People don’t know how to act around you, but, also, I want to talk about Maudie and people will know that she’s here.”

As the couple begin to pack up their home and prepare to move, they talk about Maudie.

Jason says: “My memories of Maude are that she was such a happy child and very wise and very, kind of, centred. It’s strange because she was only two-and-a-half. She used to play hide and seek. She used to love hide and seek.”

Clara: “She was just joyful. A really joyful child and I just feel so sad that I’ll never see her grow up.”

In this deeply personal and emotional film, Jason and Clara recall what happened when Maudie fell ill and the moment they discovered she had died.

Jason talks about the inquest, the moment the family discovered Maude had died of sepsis and how they have been trying to raise awareness about the condition ever since.

Jason visits King’s College Hospital, London, to meet Professor Akash Deep who is running a ground-breaking training programme to teach doctors and nurses how to spot the signs of sepsis.

In the film, Clara talks about the days following Maude’s death and how a friend of hers has stored Maude’s belongings for her because she couldn’t face packing them away.

The couple also talk about their involvement in a support group for bereaved parents and that Clara is now trained to run sessions there.

Plus Jason meets up with two dads who have connected with him online after also losing their daughters to sepsis.

Jason says: “Maude’s loss can save lives. Sharing her story and what happened and our story, that we offer hope for families, for parent’s that have lost children, that’s what I want Maude’s memory to do.”

The Dry

[Full series drop on ITVX on Thursday 23 March]

Series overview

Starring Roisin Gallagher, Ciarán Hinds, Pom Boyd, Siobhán Cullen, Moe Dunford and newcomer Adam Richardson, The Dry celebrates the joyful chaos and dark absurdities of family life in a series that is all about recovery.

When Shiv Sheridan (Gallagher) returns to Dublin after years of partying in London, she is sober and full of good intentions - but being back with her family makes staying on ‘the dry’ much harder than she expected.  As Shiv tries to navigate this new phase of her life, so must her family...and they all have issues they don’t want to face.

From the producers of Normal People, this moving comedy-drama is an irreverent, sharp and funny depiction of a family in various forms of denial. The story centres on 35-year-old Shiv, the eldest daughter, as she returns to Ireland for her grandmother’s wake, taking a break from London and her ‘career’ (with a small ‘c’) in art. Shiv is six months sober, and it is fair to say her life is not going as planned. Shiv’s family – who have never really dealt with or talked about the damage caused by the sudden death of her adored elder brother, not to mention her parents’ failing marriage or Shiv’s own chaotic behaviour – are wary of having her back. To make matters worse there’s also her charmer of an ex-boyfriend Jack, who has the uncanny knack of always appearing when she’s at her most vulnerable. His charming presence reminds Shiv of the excitement and thrill of excess from her youth – to call him a trigger would be an understatement. Can Shiv come to terms with her true addiction and the realities of her life, amid a dysfunctional yet loveable family who are each individually facing their own demons?

Episode 1

When Shiv Sheridan lands home in Dublin for her grandmother’s funeral, she finds the family are busy preparing for the wake. Sister Caroline is in organised mode, doling out tasks to everyone. As people arrive, the topic of conversation centres on Shiv and her new sobriety. Shiv and her brother Ant take refuge in the kitchen making sandwiches. The wake progresses to a boozy session. Outside Shiv meets her ex, Jack. The two share a fag and as he leaves, he kisses her. As the party winds down Shiv helps her mother to bed and finally summons up the courage to ask to stay.

Cold Case Detectives

Series overview

In this new three-part crime documentary series, detectives are on the trail of a child killer in a 60 year old murder case.

Using the latest developments in forensic science to uncover new evidence, a specialist team of cold case detectives from South Wales Police are determined to finally get justice for six-year-old Carol Ann Stephens.

The little girl disappeared from the streets of the Cathays area of Cardiff in 1959 and her body was found more than 50 miles away in West Wales two weeks later.

Featuring interviews with cold case detectives, forensic experts and friends of Carol along with archive footage and reconstructions, this series follows the team across the three episodes as they revisit old crime scenes, interview new witnesses and re-examine crucial pieces of evidence kept in storage for more than six decades.

For one seasoned detective the murder of schoolgirl Carol is a case that’s close to his heart - he was childhood friends with her. With exclusive access to the unit, the documentary also follows members of the team as they investigate other historic murders, rapes and sex crimes using the latest techniques.

This is an ITV Cymru Wales production for ITV

Episode 3

In the third episode, the team tracks the case of Roland Long, who is in custody after his DNA matched a rape in Cardiff committed in 1980. Long’s DNA was found in a semen stain left on the victim's skirt, and his profile was already on the national database because he had previously been convicted of a string of sexual assaults.

Presenting and dancing supremos, sisters and best friends, Oti and Motsi Mabuse, are heading on a journey across their glorious homeland of South Africa - to discover their extraordinary family history. In one of DNA Journey’s most moving episodes yet, the women will connect with exceptional cousins and unearth incredible family stories.

The sisters have tried to explore their history before, but with records for black South Africans almost non-existent, going on their DNA journey is the last roll of the dice to discover their roots. In a post-apartheid South Africa, the two women are determined to reclaim their history, and that of so many black South Africans, who through forced migration lost family ties. It’s also a personal voyage of discovery, such as where do their showbiz genes come from and in a family full of powerful women, will they find a positive story about their male ancestors?
